Best Hidden Gem Proposal Locations in North Carolina
Looking for the best places to propose in North Carolina? I personally believe (maybe a little biased) that the North Carolina Mountains are the ONLY place you should pop the question. Why? This state is filled with breathtaking landscapes, hidden gems, and one-of-a-kind adventures that make for the perfect proposal backdrop. From majestic mountain overlooks to charming lakeside escapes, Western North Carolina offers something special for every couple. I’ve had the honor of capturing countless unforgettable moments here, and I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite places to pop the question—whether you're dreaming of an epic mountaintop proposal or a quiet, intimate moment in nature.
Lake Nantahala
One of the top places on my list, it’s a beautiful lake that’s totally surrounded by mountains, its beauty really is unlike any other. With endless options for location, it’s amazing in any season. It’s secluded, tranquil, and absolutely perfect for your upcoming adventure makes it an amazing option for proposing in North Carolina.
Lake Nantahala provides the beauty of Lake Lure (hello, Dirty Dancing!) but remains one of those one of a kind locations perfect for a little bit more intimate setting.
2. Black Balsam Knob
Off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Black Balsam Knob is one of my most favorite locations. With stunning views of the Appalachian Mountains, gorgeous scenery, and year round evergreens, it offers the most options for having a wide range of photographs for your proposal experience. Plus, Black Balsam Knob at sunrise? BREATHTAKING.
The Western Carolina Regional Airport is one of those locations that’s tucked away that you’d never know about unless you talk to a local — but boy are its views stunning and totally worth it!
3. Western Carolina Regional Airport
The hidden gems of all hidden gems, the first time I ever photographed at this location, we were gifted the most beautiful sunset ever. Home to endless mountain views and a killer golden hour, it’s a location that’s absolutely breathtaking for popping the question. You need to have permission to shoot here, so please reach out if this option is your preference!
4. Wayah Bald
Tucked away between Franklin, NC, and Nantahala, NC, this hidden gem offers killer aerial mountain views. With the Bartram and Appalachian trails nearby, it really is an intimate adventure location that feels like a secret shared between friends. Sunrise here is truly amazing, and the drive there also includes several waterfalls that are perfect for stopping for additional photos making it another stellar option for proposing in North Carolina.
5. Buck Bald Mountain
Where North Carolina and Tennessee meet there are so many different options and views to choose from. Buck Bald Mountain is a great option for popping the question because you can drive right up to the bald (the top of a mountain that has no trees that means you can typically see mountain lines because of its barren top). It’s the perfect place for a picnic or having endless mountain views as the backdrop to your big moment.
6. Bell Mountain
This location is technically located in North Georgia, but it overlooks Lake Chatuge, which is split between North Georgia and Western North Carolina, so we’re counting it! This location is particularly great for the winter, when the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed. It offers stunning panoramic views of the lake, surrounding towns, and mountains, while being easily accessible — you can drive right up to the overlook. It’s truly a breathtaking hidden gem for choosing to propose near North Carolina.
Buck Bald provides both a meadow that’s perfect for picnics as well as panoramic mountain views.
Bell Mountain offers stunning panoramic views of the mountains and lakes of nearby North Georgia and Western North Carolina.
Here’s the real secret to proposing in North Carolina:
The best place to propose to your partner is anywhere that’s special to you. In reality, what’s going to make your day special is the fact that you and your person are deciding to spend forever together — the surrounding scenery is just an added breathtaking bonus!
It can be stressful thinking through the details, the constant changing mountain weather, and the many things that can go wrong — but that’s where I come in. From proposals that included an airplane flying by to drop the ring, to sunrise on the parkway, to an absolutely fogged out mountainside adventure — I’m prepared for and ready to capture your special moments!
