Foggy Blue Ridge Parkway Engagement

Sometimes, the mountains have their own plans.

Wes and Sophia met me on the Blue Ridge Parkway for what we thought would be a golden-hour engagement session — the kind with warm light spilling over the ridges and endless views stretching toward forever. But instead, we were greeted by a wall of fog. Thick, quiet, unassuming. The kind that softens everything it touches.

We could barely see past the edge of the overlook, but somehow, it felt like the world had folded in on itself — just us, the whisper of wind, and the sound of their laughter disappearing into the mist.

We traveled down the mountain a little (about 2 miles) and the world opened up. They really wanted that epic mountain view so we explored the Blue Ridge Parkway a little. Wes picked a handful of wildflowers for Sophia. We looked out toward Table Rock, and I asked them the simple question to trust me.

That trust became the heartbeat of our time together. They let go of control — of the “perfect” weather, the “perfect” plan — and leaned into presence. That’s where the magic always lives.

We headed back to Black Balsam Knob, and the fog thickened, the world going quiet. Every step felt cinematic, every breath reverent. Their silhouettes blurred into one, edges softened by the light, like something out of Pride and Prejudice. It was romantic and ethereal, almost otherworldly — as if time itself paused to bear witness. Personally, the Blue Ridge Parkway, cloaked in a cloud creates some of the most romantic moments.

And maybe that’s what I love most about photographing couples like Wes and Sophia. The reminder that love doesn’t need perfect conditions to be breathtaking. Sometimes, the most sacred moments arrive unannounced — wrapped in clouds, hidden in fog, waiting for us to slow down enough to see them.

Because even when the view disappears, love remains — steady, unwavering, beautiful.
